Tips and Tricks to Clean Your Makeup Brushes

If you don’t know how to clean makeup brushes and you think they need a deep wash, we have the best tricks to do it effectively.

One of the things that most makeup lovers hate doing is cleaning their brushes. But no matter how lazy we are, we have to do it regularly to keep the brushes in perfect condition.

Why Wash Makeup Brushes?

If we say it’s necessary to clean makeup brushes, it’s not on a whim, but because they can become a real breeding ground for bacteria and all these bacteria will go on our faces! So, the same way we often wash towels, we should do the same with brushes. Otherwise, they can affect our skin and cause infections, and also spoil our cosmetics.

Even if we keep our makeup brushes in perfect condition, they can last us for years. Of course, when the bristles start to lose or weaken and look bad, you’ll have to replace them with new ones. In any case, if you take good care of them, they will last a long time.

Depending on the makeup brushes you use, the wash frequency will be different. If you use the brushes for liquid products, such as a makeup base, it is advisable to clean them every week or every fifteen days at the most. This base is the one that accumulates the most product and, therefore, also the one that contains the most dirt.

On the other hand, if we refer to the brushes with which we apply powders, such as powder makeup or blush, we must clean them at least every fifteen days. The shade brushes will depend on their use, but it is ideal for cleaning them once a month.

How Do You Clean Makeup Brushes?

There are different systems to clean makeup brushes, but you also have to consider the material they are made with to use one or the other cleaning product. Pay attention to the different ways to do this.

With Soap and Water

It is one of the most classic systems and perhaps the one you will use the most. The only thing you should keep in mind is to make sure that that the soap is as neutral as possible; you can even buy a special brush cleaner.

The water needs to be warm to better remove all the dirt accumulated on the brush. Now, if you use natural fiber brushes, we recommend using a mild brush cleaner as if it were your hair. There are even professionals who recommend the use of shampoo because they are very fragile, more expensive, and need extra care. If, on the other hand, they are synthetic hairbrushes, you can even use dish soap. They are indicated to remove the grease much faster and more effectively.

In both cases, you should carefully clean your brushes by making circles with your hand. You can also use a cleaning glove to make the work more comfortable, as the stretch marks help remove accumulated dirt particles. Another technique is filling a bowl with warm water, adding the soap, and inserting the brushes. Make circular movements with them until they are clean, and afterward, rinse them with clean water to remove all the dirt.

To finish, remove excess moisture from the makeup brushes. This should be done carefully, for example, by placing them on a clean towel. Do not store them until they are completely dry. Otherwise, the moisture will accumulate and may lead to mold.

Cleaning Brushes With Oil

This technique is especially recommended for brushes used with foundations or correctors. This is because these products contain a greasy base, and only with soap and water the remainders of the makeup cannot be removed.

You have several possibilities because you can use olive oil, almond oil, or something similar. For example, it is best to pour a little oil on an absorbent kitchen paper or a towel and carefully clean the brush little by little. This way, you can undo the greasy makeup residue. But don’t forget to use soapy water to finish, as indicated in the previous paragraph.

It can be a somewhat expensive method, yes, mostly because of the time. However, it is a great way to take care of your makeup brushes.
